About Pak Mong

Known among amateur radio friends as Pak Mong or Among, his real name is Abdul Wahid bin Mohamad Noer, with the callsign YF5OR.

Born and raised in Karimun Island, Riau Islands, Indonesia, Pak Mong has lived in darkness for nearly 45 years after a tragic accident took away his sight in his 20's.

Despite his condition, he continues to live independently — managing household chores, preparing meals, washing clothes, going to the mosque, and communicating with fellow radio operators.

He is a loving husband and father of three children, while his wife works as a teacher to support the family.

Personal Reflection

A Journey That Changed Perspective

Visiting Pak Mong's home in Tanjung Balai Karimun was more than just a casual trip. It became a moment of deep reflection about life, dignity, and the meaning of helping others.

Looking at his modest home, very little had changed over the years. The old sofa remained the same. The furniture remained the same. Life continued in simplicity and hardship.

Yet, what stood out most was not poverty — but strength.

Pak Mong never complained. He carried himself with calmness and patience, relying on faith and perseverance to continue living.

Watching his eldest son quietly assisting his father reminded the writer of his own childhood growing up in poverty — going to school with plastic shoes, carrying rice wrapped in palm leaves, and living through difficult times with humility.

Those memories created a powerful emotional connection that transformed sympathy into a sincere desire to help.

Amateur Radio

Friendship Beyond Borders

Amateur radio became one of Pak Mong's windows to the world.

Through donated radio equipment from fellow radio operators, including contributions from the late 9W2JOH Feroz, he was able to stay connected with friends across borders.

Beyond communication, amateur radio created a community of friendship, brotherhood, and compassion around him.

The journey to Karimun Island was not simply about meeting a radio operator — it was about understanding humanity through the life of a remarkable man.
